York University’s strategic research plan Building on Strength identifies Forging a Just and Sustainable World as one of six major research themes and further identifies Public Engagement for a Just and Sustainable World as one of five compelling areas of opportunity for the development of research at York over the next five years.

Research in sustainability is a major focus of research at York that spans the University and touches on the aims of every faculty. Much of this research is conducted in York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies, but it also occurs in our Faculties of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, Science, Business, Fine Arts, Health, Education, Law, Engineering and Glendon College.

York University is committed to supporting the growth and development of initiatives to enable the recognition of the University as a Canadian leader in sustainability research. During the 2014-15 academic year, I am delighted to be leading a task force to examine options and develop innovative ideas for highlighting and further building York University’s research in this area. This task force will leverage collegial expertise, solicit broad advice on recommendations towards how York can continue to leverage and further advance research opportunities in this area.

I look forward to working with the volunteer members of the task force committee to help shape and grow York’s leadership in sustainable research.
